THE HUNTRESS 2024
Artemis was an idea that was born in 2009. It is the first oil painting that I have ever started.
She is unique in that there are no concept sketches of her. She was created in a flair of creativity by viewing reference photos with an image of what I wanted to portray in my mind.
Ancient Mythology
Artemis is the Greek Goddess of the Hunt, the Moon, Wild Animals and Chastity. Her Roman equivalent is Diana. She is the twin sister of Apollo and the daughter of Zeus and Leto.
Monochrome in blue and white.
I decided to capture my vision in blue and white monochrome. I used Ultramarine in Deep & Light colours and Titanium White.
I also used metallic gold oil colour and some black to deepen the blue.
Ancient Symbolism meets Artistic licence
She has the prerequisite symbolism of quiver and arrows. However i have added additional elements of her symbolism in the galaxy as reference to her being the goddess of the moon, and her quiver depicts the constellation of Orion in reference to the hunter of the myths.
I have further added my own symbols in the star flowers I have placed in her hair and the gold of her arrows.
Also in reference to the Orion Myths I have given her arrows red feathers in the symbolism of love.
Due to her delicate nature, being my first oil painting she is not exactly as archival as I would like due to my lack of understanding about oils and I shudder to think of the different paint layers of the painting. She is not for sale, However will serve as a proud moment as my first stepping stone into the realms of oil painting.
Temple Site Ephesus was considered one of the Ancient Wonders of the Ancient World.
Ancient Symbolism
Deer, cypress, bow, arrow, a quiver, and hunting knives.
